National Draw Recap

Hey all you Comets: We got some great lacrosse in this weekend at all levels. I believe every one of you improved your game and hopefully you had fun doing it!

Call it an invaluable experience because you got to see that you are part of something that is really big and the quality of play out there is strong but within grasp of each and every one of you.

We encouraged you to watch the competition at all levels from Rising Stars to Varsity to see what the best teams are doing. Hopefully most of you caught some of the top teams in action. Each age group got an opportunity to play against teams that are amongst the best in the country and we had our moments with each of them.

If you watched any of the other games here are some things that stood out on the best teams:

  • Ease of use of both hands by the strong players and teams
  • Solid help defense (communication)
  • Solid base when covering the ball carrier, shuffling feet and taking away the center of the field – help and recover
  • Moving the ball in transition when players are open and moving to the ball
  • Advancing the ball with your speed if no one is open to create odd man situations
  • Riding from endline to endline
  • Importance of draw control
  • Ability to recognize and execute the re- directing of the ball on clears
  • Using the goalie as an outlet on clears and ground balls around the crease
  • Patience with the ball on clears
  • Setting picks in the midfield and constantly moving on clears
  • Good decision making all over the field
  • Balance on offense and clearing out the strong side of the field for dodging
  • Last but not least great conditioning by the strong players and teams

Ok, this all sounds familiar doesn’t it? Well, these simple fundamental things just need to be done consistently - If we can do this, we all move to the next level.

From the 20,000 foot level, we are a new program that exhibits a lot of athleticism but lack some of the polish of the traditional programs and therefore we need to work harder than they do. Each year all our age groups get stronger and the results show that. The Metacomets have established a reputation for driven athletic players that are coachable great kids. The trick is to continue to absorb and execute the things we talk about in Coaches Corner and we will be on our way to breaking into the elite group of select teams and you will get the recognition you deserve.

Starts with Wall Ball!!!!!!!!!. Show you dedication and hit the wall (with your weak hand especially). Continue with some agility work and conditioning in between practices. We were showing a need for conditioning in many of the games.

Congrats to the Rising Stars who beat 3 well established programs TriState, Metro and Ultimate all old established programs from outside of Philly and you showed great poise against one of the strongest groups of 2012 (9th graders) players in the country when you played the Yellow Jackets. Nice Work young ladies. Chloe and I were very proud of you.

Congrats to the JV team who played some of the best national teams at your age group in National Draw’s top bracket. Although the record might not look great on paper, going 1-1-2, you beat a good Sitaris team, tied a very good Long Island team that got lucky in the last minute, and played tough against two of the best teams at the top level. Well done to everyone. A special thanks to our outstanding goaltending from Laura DeBlois who kept us in many games and did double duty with the Rising Stars! 8 games – all game long - in one Tournament. Wow! MVP Honors go to Laura!!

Congrats to the Varsity team who went 2-1-1 in the top bracket, beating very elite teams from NY/NJ/PA (Tristate), Long Island (Black Jacks), tied the Philadelphia area Ultimate team and lost to a great New Lax program. Coming off a tiring weekend, the Premier division Champs from the Champions Cup played well enough to come in second in their grouping to New Lax. The coaches were proud of everyone’s efforts and especially thankful to the 10’s that did double duty with the JV.

To all 2009’s and even 2010’s, please email college coaches and let them know that you will be playing for the comets at All Star Express, what your jersey number is with maybe something like "I recently attended the National Draw and was uncertain of your attendance at All Star Express, I am planning on attending the and was wondering if you are planning on attending??
